 TORROELLA DE MONTGRÍ

Torroella de MontgríThe town of Torroella de Montgrí is located 6km from the sea, between the Montgrí Hill (309m) and the Riber Ter, in the Baix Empordà district.

The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 14,8ºC, with averges of 8,8ºC in January abd 22,5ºC in July. The town’s main sources of income are agriculture, thanks to its fertile irrigated farming lands, and commerce, also present, with workshops and small factories. While not being a full-blooded tourist town, Torroella offers a series of attractions that are becoming increasingly appreciated by region and a considerable variety of commercial amenities. The town’s busy cultural calendar also attracts tourists as well as the local residents.

A historic town: Torroella lies at the foot of the Montgrí, a limestone massif with caves like the Cau del Duc, which served as a shelter for humans 300.000 years ago. The plain of the Baix Ter was also the site of the first settlements in Catalonia, like that of la Fonollera, dated around 1,800BC. There are also important remains from Roman times.

The first documented records of Torroella are from the year 888 and the first resident we know of went bu the name of Adiscle. From the 10th to 12th centuries the town was limited to the enclosure of La Cellera and was governed by a feudal family related to the Counts of Empúries.

Torroella became a royal town in 1273. From that time it still conserves its urban layout, with an ordered grid of streets that meet in the square. There are two architectural jewels from than period: the Gothic-style Church of Sant Genís and the Montgrí Castle.

Many of the houses of the modern period that still stand are form de 16th. To 18th centuries and a good sampling of them are included in the itinerary.

One final note: at the end of the 19th century many Torroella resident emigrated to the Americans, and those who returned with fortunes built colonial-style mensions tht also form part of this architectural archive.
